MGT Hybrid Motors

Features and Benefits

Energy Efficiency

Feature

MGT Hybrid Dual Rotor motors are ultra-efficient, all well exceeding proposed IE5 efficiency standards.

Benefit

Reduced energy expense for the life of the motor providing rapid payback.

Direct AC Line Operation

Feature

Permanent magnet assisted motor able to operate directly off the AC line.

Benefit

Unlike conventional PM motors, MGT Hybrid motors do not require a VFD to operate.  For many applications this eliminates the cost and efficiency losses of the VFD while still providing PM motor-like efficiency performance.   This also allows for bypass operation at rated speeds eliminating need for back up VFD in variable speed applications when codes would otherwise require.

High Starting Torque

Feature

Starting torque similar to AC Induction motor along with low in-rush current.

Benefit

Unlike other line start permanent magnet (LSPM) motors, MGT Hybrid Motors easily overcome high inertia loads.

Smooth Acceleration

Feature

MGT Hybrid motors eliminate initial noisy "kick" torque associated with LSPM motors.

Benefit

The smooth (directly off the AC power line) acceleration eliminates the damage and/or reduced life of equipment that would otherwise be caused by the “kick” torque.

Wide Range of AC Line Operated Speeds

Feature

Available in 2 pole (3600 rpm) and 4 pole (1800 rpm) models.  Additionally available with a simple, fully integrated, robust, economical gear mechanism, allowing the motors to be operated at virtually any desired RPM from 300 to 1800 rpm.

Benefit

Ability to match motor rated speed to desired application speed for direct drive applications without the need for belts/pulleys and/or VFDs, hence reducing system costs, complexity, and maintenance, while maintaining high levels of efficiency.

High Power Factor

Feature

Power factor exceeds .98 when operated off AC power line.

Benefit

Eliminates power factor surcharges and lowers demand charges by the electric utility.  Eliminates need and costs of power factor correction by VFD or capacitors.

Compatible with All Standard VFDs

Feature

Though permanent magnet assisted, MGT Hybrid Motors do NOT require PM compatible VFDs, as do conventional permanent magnet motors.  Additionally, unlike conventional PM motors, MGT Hybrid Motors do not require a one-to-one relationship with the VFD, i.e., multiple motors can be ganged and controlled by a single VFD.

Benefit

Users are not limited to VFD models that are permanent magnet motor compatible (many of the most popular HVAC models are not), while still achieving permanent magnet levels of efficiency and synchronization.  The ability to gang multiple motors on a single VFD saves costs and reduced complexity.

High Torque Density

Feature

The use of rare-earth permanent magnets increases the “torque density” (amount of torque that can be generated per physical volume of the motor).

Benefit

MGT Hybrid motors are often smaller and lighter than comparable AC induction motors.  This can be an advantage where physical space is a constraint.  Or, it may reduce the necessary mounting infrastructure, an advantage in many direct drive applications.  It also reduces some of the material costs of the motor, increasing their price competitiveness.

Runs Quiet

Feature

Low audible noise

Benefit

Compatible with all HVAC and pump applications requiring low audible noise.

Runs Cool

Feature

The motors ultra-efficiency results in lower losses (i.e. heat generated by the motor).

Benefit

In air cooling applications with multiple motors driving fans, the reduced motor heat reduces the air-conditioning load - further reducing energy expense.

Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated

Feature

MGT Hybrid Dual Rotor motors, due to their ultra-high efficiency, are of TENV design, meeting IP66 levels of ingress protection.

Benefit

MGT Hybrid Dual Rotor motors are suitable for outdoor exposure and/or environments characterized by dust or moisture.
